Gurunath Meiyappan-CskOwner arrested

Gurunath Meiyappan, owner of Chennai Super Kings, arrested

Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of BCCI President N Srinivasan and owner of Chennai Super Kings, was arrested  tonight for his alleged involvement in betting on IPL matches, raising questions over the future of the franchise.
"We have interrogated Gurunath based on information we have. We have found his involvement in the offence related to IPL betting case. We have placed him under arrest", Joint Commissioner (Crime) of Mumbai Police Himanshu Roy told
reporters.
Earlier, Meiyappan, Chennai Super Kings owner, arrived here this evening for questioning by Mumbai police's crime branch following allegations of involvement in betting in the IPL, police said.
Joint Commissioner (crime) Himanshu Roy said he would be questioned tonight and that he was not detained at the airport.
Accompanied by his lawyer, the 35-year-old CSK honcho arrived from Madurai by a chartered flight and was taken in a car piloted by a police jeep carrying crime branch personnel over a couple of hours after the deadline for his personal appearance ended at 5 pm.
Roy said the crime branch would question him in the light of what actor Vindoo Dara Singh, arrested for his alleged links with bookmakers, had said during his custodial interrogation and what police had come to know in the course of its investigation.
Asked if Meiyappan would be arrested after questioning, he said, "nothing has been decided. It is not going to be a pre-conceived decision. We will take a call only after questioning him."
Roy said Meiyappan had sent a communication saying it would not be possible for him to appear by the 5 pm deadline set by the Mumbai crime branch in summons issued to him yesterday.
He said Vindoo and Meiyappan would also be brought face to face during the questioning and the latter's lawyer would not be allowed to be present during the proceedings.

Sreesanth arrested for spot-fixing

S. Sreesanth and two other players  Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan of the Rajasthan Royals Indian Premier League team have been arrested by the Delhi Police and charged with spot-fixing in the on-going tournament.
The accused were arrested in a secret swoop at the Trident Hotel in Mumbai, where they were staying, and will be brought to Delhi to be produced in court.  The police have also arrested seven bookies. Police sources said the players have been accused of spot-fixing in different matches this week. They also said that the arrests were part of an investigation conducted over months by the special cell of the Delhi Police into alleged spot-fixing in the cash-rich IPL tournament, the sixth edition of which is being played now.

The Rajasthan Royals franchise, which is co-owned by Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, has said in statement that, "We are completely taken by surprise... We will fully cooperate with the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation. The management at Rajasthan Royals has a zero-tolerance approach to anything that is against the spirit of the game."
Chandila, 29, has played for Haryana and the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL previously. Chavan, 27, has played for Mumbai.

Spot fixing is the manipulation of a particular ball or wicket in a cricket tournament, which is then betted upon.

Betting on sports is illegal in India but is allegedly big business in the IPL and is  run by underground syndicates in Mumbai and other parts of the country. Sources said bookies often operate out of vehicles now to avoid detection.
